Gum Disease

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is when bacteria in your mouth causes infection in your gums and can lead to issues such as loose teeth, bone loss, and in serious cases can increase your likelihood of experiencing stroke and heart disease.

Gum disease can be characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Red, swollen gums

  • Bleeding gums

  • Receding gums or deep pockets between teeth and gums

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Loose or shifting teeth

  • Changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down

Gum disease begins with mild symptoms such as gum inflammation (gingivitis) which can be reversed with the right treatment and care plan. If you do not get immediate care, it can lead to periodontitis which can be very painful and be much more serious.

The doctors at North Bethesda Dental Associates highly recommend visiting our Rockville dental practice twice a year so we can recognize the early signs of gum disease and establish a treatment plan as early as possible. No matter where you are in your journey, we are here to help support you and improve your oral health. We have a variety of treatments to improve your gum health and if surgical intervention is required, we can guide you accordingly.
