TMJ/TMD Treatment

Chronic jaw pain, known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD), refers to the issues that affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)—these are the joints you find in your jaw.

When you experience issues in this joint, it can be due to a number of causes such as a misaligned bit, dental trauma, or even excess muscle tension. TMD can be extremely uncomfortable and painful, so your Rockville dentists are here to provide you with relief.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s important to share them with your doctor as they can begin a treatment plan for chronic jaw pain if you require it and help alleviate your pain:

  • Restricted movement around your jaw bone or muscles

  • Clicking or popping noise while you chew

  • Persistent headaches or earaches

  • Pains around the jaw muscles

If our doctors diagnose you with TMD, there are a variety of at-home treatments to relieve your pain, including using a mouth guard or eating soft foods.

Some advanced TMJ disorders may require orthodontic work or surgery—this may include invisalign treatment to align your bite, replacing missing teeth to improve chewing or undergoing a more holistic approach for stress alleviation to reduce tension in the jaw. Your case will be reviewed during your appointment at our dental practice in North Bethesda and your treatment plan will be recommended for your specific needs.
