Mouth Guards
Mouth guards are recommended for a variety of reasons, for example when you take part in contact sports or if you grind your teeth. They are used to protect your teeth and gums and reduce dental issues that can otherwise present themselves, such as fractured teeth.
Bruxism is a condition where you involuntarily grind or clench your teeth and can lead to tooth damage, bone loss, jaw pain, and headaches. Most people experience bruxism when they are sleeping, or when they are stressed. It’s possible that you may not realize you suffer from bruxism until you get a dental exam at your North Bethesda dental practice.
If you grind your teeth, our doctors can create a custom mouth guard that is comfortable and protects your teeth from rubbing and therefore, dental issues. However, we can also provide resources and recommendations of ways to reduce stress in order to provide a more holistic approach to reducing bruxism.
The mouth guard can also provide a protective barrier for our patients who enjoy contact sports to keep their teeth safe and intact. We highly recommend a custom mouth guard, as our patients are more likely to wear their mouth guard when it fits well. We can also offer bespoke designs—this is particularly popular with our younger patients!
